On the tenth anniversary of September 11, 2001, let us come together to celebrate our spiritual oneness and appreciate our unique forms of worship. We shall gather with clergy and people of many paths to invoke spirit, to pray and sing together as one people, and to stand as a unified presence of peace in our world. We shall explore, through both prayer and discussion, how each of us can make peace in our hearts and manifest peace in our world by acknowledging the underlying unity of all faiths.

A Grief Like No Other: Serving People Grieving the Violent Death of Someone They Love with Kathleen O’Hara

When someone loses a loved one to violence their grief is different. We want to serve them but don’t know what to do or say. We have difficulty processing our own response to the death and can be ineffective at a time when we are most needed. This workshop will help you serve people who have lost a loved one to a violent or sudden death: homicide, suicide, drug overdose, war, terrorism, vehicular manslaughter, natural disaster or any sudden event. You will learn about traumatic grief in the first five years and the involvement of the criminal justice system. We will explore your personal responses to these kinds of death and how to deal with your feelings. You will learn what survivors need and how to serve them—and what not to do. We will also explore how to create meaningful rituals and services for this kind of death so you can help people honor their loved ones.

Kathleen O’Hara, MA is a psychotherapist, international keynote speaker, workshop and retreat provider, policy and program developer and author of A Grief Like No Other, surviving the violent death of someone you love. She has worked extensively in the field of traumatic grief and victims’ rights advocacy in the US, Canada and the UK. Healing On The Hudson

One Spirit grew out of the ashes of 9/11 almost ten years ago. On that eventful day the New York Waterways Ferrries of Mr. Arthur Imperatore transported many people across the river to safety. More recently on January 15th, 2009 his ferries rescued the passengers and crew of US Airways Flight 1549 that landed in the Hudson River. Mr. Imperatore is a gentleman who has spent his life building businesses that create a sense of community for all its constituents. He has long hoped to provide the opportunity for the many thousands of residents and commuters who pass through his flagship terminal at Port Imperial (across the Hudson from the Empire State Building), with an opportunity for deeper connection based on the varied expressions of wisdom that have come down to us throughout the ages.

At One Spirit we have worked with various approaches to creating an ongoing spiritual community built on the InterSpiritual, Global Evolutionary foundation that supports all of our work. The diverse talent in the One Spirit community can make this possibility a reality. Mr. Imperatore is offering his terminal at Port Imperial, an extraordinary venue, to join together to create a deeply meaningful gathering that can serve a significant community in the New York environment. The Upanishads – sacred writings revealed to the sages of the Vedic civilization perhaps 5,000 years ago, are (along with the Vedas) the oldest expression of the spiritual wisdom which underlies all religions. Within their precise poetry, we find a mystical vision of the deep unifying intelligence which is, and which permeates, all of creation.

The Upanishads serve as sacred texts of Hinduism, and have influenced modern thinkers such as Goethe, Yeats and Emerson. Their profound explorations about the nature of reality, the unity and interconnectedness of all things, and the peace to be found within that understanding and self-knowledge – the very heart of the Vedic revelation – are the core of most modern spirituality.
