Participation is an important part of the program requirements. In-class participation provides an opportunity to speak in front of others - a real challenge for many of us - in order to develop a capacity for skillful verbal communication. On-line listserve groups offer a forum for exploring ideas and different viewpoints, sharing concerns, and learning to minister to one another. All ethical systems teach us that words can be healing or hurtful. Learning to be simultaneously kind and truthful is a vital skill for anyone seeking to serve others in a skillful way.

Homework provides the opportunity to develop clear thinking and good writing skills. The dialogue between Deans and students around written assignments is an opportunity to deepen your thinking and expand your experience of the sacred.

Spiritual Practice is the key to developing our inner spaciousness and our capacity to maintain a centered attitude in the face of all of life’s experiences. We understand spiritual practice in its deepest sense. You will have the opportunity to learn about, experience first-hand, and work with a broad range of traditional and time-tested practices from many spiritual traditions as well as a wide variety of contemporary practices. Even more vital than the specifics of any practice is the attitude and openness that we bring, not only to our spiritual practice, but also to each moment of our life.

Being Open to the “Deeper Curriculum.” We use the term “the deeper curriculum” to refer to the life experiences and challenges that occur over the course of our two-year journey. Often these experiences support us to face and release whatever may be blocking our capacity to be as loving and present to our lives as we aspire to be. Some of these experiences will occur as we naturally rub up against one another in community. Others will be things that happen in the other areas of our lives over the two years of the program. Embracing everything that occurs as an opportunity for healing and growth – with the loving support and encouragement of staff and classmates – can radically transform our experience of life and our capacity to be of spiritual service to others.
