Overview - Continued

Religion must become humanity’s conveyor belt to higher consciousness. In order to accomplish this vital task we must:

  • Clearly delineate how religion can express a true spirituality
  • Discern the wisdom offered by the ancient traditions for our lives today
  • Integrate the new knowledge offered by science, psychology and cultural studies with our existing ways of making meaning
  • Free ourselves from belief systems that no longer help us live a meaningful life, including; dogma, superstition, outdated customs and fear of the body among others
  • Liberate ourselves from the constraints of our outmoded conditioning and beliefs
  • Replace a Concept of God with an Experience of God through direct mystical experience
  • Open our heart to a new level of love and compassion
  • Understand and integrate the essential contributions at the heart of the world religions into meaningful expressions and enduring structures that permeate every area of our lives
  • Train ourselves to see through the eyes of the One in order to a gain larger perspective and provide a solid foundation for right action
  • Learn to link our awareness, thinking and feeling with the awareness of the Universe, so that as we join with others in a field of presence we alter our individual consciousness and simultaneously effect a transformation in the surrounding environment; and the institutions we participate in
Now is the time for us to integrate the heritage of human wisdom at the core of the world’s great spiritual, and philosophical traditions into a rich, multi-textured resource for our specie’s further evolution. Our deepest ways of making meaning, as expressed through religious forms, can no longer be a stumbling block to human evolution. No longer can religious expression be a cause of conflict, chaos and perhaps even the extinction of the species. It is only recently that thinkers such as Sri Aurobindo, Tielhard De Chardin, Bede Griffiths, Ken Wilber, Brother Wayne Teasdale and Thomas Berry among others have begun to integrate the full spectrum of the ancient wisdom with contemporary knowledge in psychology, science and the humanities. Only today is it possible to access a complete picture of the entire heritage of human wisdom. Such a holistic study has the potential to open our hearts in ways that lead to a beter understanding of the human condition and a deeper capacity to act skillfully even under difficult conditions.
