“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God”.
With this cryptic announcement, the author of this account of Jesus’s ministry invites us into the heart of the Great Mystery which underlies the timeless Christian story. Differing profoundly from the other Gospels, John offers his readers a compelling portrait of Jesus through a rich combination of simple images, complex symbols, and long monologues.
This Jesus is not hidden by pithy parable, but proclaims his message of bringing light and redemption into a dark world with certain authority, even as he is attacked by those in power. Mark, Matthew, and Luke tell of many miracles by this rabbi and teacher, but just five are described by John (described in Chapter 21 as “the disciple whom Jesus loved”), and only one – the feeding of the multitudes – is known to the other Gospel writers.
Yet of the four common Gospels, John’s mystical text is known as “the Spiritual Gospel”, because it is here that Jesus is proclaimed “the Light of the World” and makes the revolutionary statement: “No one can see the kingdom of God without being born again.” Only here does the powerful figure who will change history confront us as the bread of life, the good shepherd, the resurrection and the life, the true vine.
“The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.”
